Help choosing your colour scheme

Layout is not always the most important part of any design. Choosing the correct colour scheme not only makes your website look good, but tells the audience who you are and what you do.
Corporate sites tend to use blues to show trust, designer sites very often use fresh bright pinks on contrasting blacks, and well established companies sometimes use browns to show quality. These rules are obviously not set, but you wouldn’t see for example a school using fluorescent green for it is not professional or suited to that sector.
Of course it is easy deciding on a colour, but it is then contrasting and complementary colours to accompany the chosen colour. Also different shades of the colour could make the company look dated or really fresh.
There are many sites out there to help you decide on a scheme, but I would really recommend Kuler by Adobe. A colour palette is available with many arms to choose suitable colours. These help select complimenting colours. You could select trios of colours or a range of six. If you prefer there are many colour sets saved on there. You can search by name to find a scheme to match your needs. There’s also a feature to upload an image to base your colour scheme on. These are great if your focal point is an image and you want your site to work around it.
